Annual colloquium in memory of Helen Lynd. The late Helen Lynd, a member of the SLC faculty from 1928-1964, was a distinguished social thinker whose writing and teaching have had a profound effect on scholarship in a range of disciplines -- sociology, philosophy, political science, literature; her educational theories and practices also helped to shape what we know today as a Sarah Lawrence Education. Featured speakers include faculty members Robert Dejarlais and Mary A. Porter, and alumna Lauren J. Fishbein '82.

Helen Merrell Lynd (March 17, 1896 – January 30, 1982) was an American sociologist, social philosopher, educator, and author. She is best known for conducting the first Middletown studies of Muncie, Indiana, with her husband, Robert Staughton Lynd; as the coauthor of Middletown: A Study in Contemporary American Culture (1929) and Middletown in Transition: A Study in Cultural Conflicts (1937); and a pioneer in the use of social surveys.
